Pit Fire - 1 Day Workshop

from $120.00
sold out

November 23, 2024 • 10am - 4pm

***If sold out, please fill out the interest form below. If we have enough interest, we may open a one day Sunday workshop on Nov. 24!

Join us for a day of pit firing at a campsite near the beautiful coast of Malibu, CA. This Saturday workshop is hosted as a collaboration between Mariana Micheli Studio and Hendmade Ceramics. Participants will learn from and work alongside Mariana and Joseph to load a pit firing, as well as how to prepare vessels for the fire using provided colorant materials. A campsite lunch is included, along with an optional nature hike near the campground.

Participants can opt to bring their own vessels or have them provided for an additional cost. For participants bringing their own pots: Please bring at least two (2) pots for pit firing, each with a maximum dimension of 12″ in any direction. Pots must already be bisque fired and can be made of earthenware or mid/high-fire clay bodies. Thought not required, we also recommend the following: To reduce chances of breakage, bring pots that have grog in the clay body and are of medium thickness without long extremities or attached segments. For optimal surface results/colors, we recommend pots with terra sigillata and/or burnished surfaces, and clay that bisque fires to a white or other light color.

This workshop is collaborative. Participants will log information about their preparations and send to workshop hosts, so that results can be shared with attendees. This practice ensures we are all able to learn from one another’s experimentation, and also aids hosts in identifying participants’ vessels post-firing. Participants must arrange to pick up their vessels in Pasadena or Atwater Village on or before December 9, 2024.

**After registering, you will receive a packet with detailed information via email. If you don’t receive it within 48 hours, please reach out to Joseph or Mariana directly.
