Pit Fire - 2 Day Camp Out

from $200.00
sold out

Nov. 22 (Friday) 2PM - Nov. 24 (Sunday) 12PM

Love the outdoors? Want to gain experience pit firing pottery? Join us for two nights as we camp under stars and sycamores around clay-filled fire pits near the beautiful coast of Malibu, CA. This workshop is hosted as a collaboration between Mariana Micheli Studio and Hendmade Ceramics. Participants get hands-on practice with pit firing, with the special opportunity to attempt a first firing and then alter their methods during a second firing the next day. Participants will learn from and work alongside Mariana and Joseph to unload/load the pit, as well as how to prepare vessels for the fire using provided natural colorant materials.

Participants are responsible for bringing their own camping supplies—a recommended supply list is sent to registered participants. Five meals are provided (dinner on Friday, three meals on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday), and participants are expected to share in cooking and clean up duties. Participants can opt to bring their own vessels or have them provided for an additional cost. For participants bringing their own pots: Please bring at least three (3) pots for pit firing, each with a maximum dimension of 12″ in any direction. Feel free to bring more of various sizes, in case there is room for more in the pits. Pots must already be bisque fired and can be made of earthenware or mid/high-fire clay bodies. Though not required, we also recommend the following: To reduce chances of breakage, bring pots that have grog in the clay body and are of medium thickness without long extremities or attached segments. For optimal surface results/colors, we recommend pots with terra sigillata and/or burnished surfaces, and clay that bisque fires to a white or other light color.

This workshop is collaborative. Participants will log information about their preparations and send each one to workshop hosts, so that results can be shared within the group. This 2 Day Camp Out workshop’s extended timeline gives participants the opportunity to connect and to learn from one another about their own experiences in pit firing or other low-fire methods, along with time for exploration of local trails and beaches in the area (when not on fire-watching duty). Participants will leave the workshop Sunday with their fired vessels and a deeper knowledge of the pit firing process. See below for full schedule.

**After registering, you will receive a packet with detailed information via email. If you don’t receive it within 48 hours, please reach out to me, Joseph, directly!
